〜わけにはいかない

cannot afford to... / must not... (for good reason)

Structure

V-辞書形 / V-ない形 + わけにはいかない

Explanation

Indicates that one cannot do something for reasons of duty or propriety, "cannot afford to...". Attaches to the dictionary/nai-form + わけにはいかない.

Examples

明日は大事な会議があるから、休むわけにはいきません。

I have an important meeting tomorrow, so I can't take a day off.

上司の前で、黙っているわけにはいきません。

I can't stay silent in front of my boss.

Note

わけにはいかない means cannot do for reasons of duty; different from てはいけない (prohibition).
