Structure
普通形 + のではあるまいか；N + ではあるまいか
Explanation
A tentative speculation ("might it not be...?"). More literary than ではないだろうか. Attached to nouns or the plain form of verbs. あるまい is a classical form of ないだろう.
Examples
これは誰かの間違いではあるまいか。
Could this be someone's mistake?
彼は本当に約束を守るのではあるまいか。
Might he actually keep his promise?
Note
A literary, more formal version of ではないだろうか. Common in formal writing and commentary.
