状態・変化N2

〜げ

looking... / seeming...

Structure

い形語幹/な形語幹/V-ます形(語幹)+ げ(に/な)

Explanation

Attached to the stem of i-adjectives, na-adjectives, the masu-stem of verbs, or たい/ない, indicating an appearance or manner observed from outside: 楽しげ, 寂しげ, 得意げ, 言いたげ. Used as 〜げに before verbs and 〜げなN before nouns.

Examples

彼は何か言いたげに、こちらの方をちらりと見た。

He glanced over, looking as if he wanted to say something.

子どもたちは楽しげに遊んでいる。

The children are playing happily (it seems).

Note

げ describes how someone looks from the outside; it cannot describe the speaker's own feelings (not 私が寂しげ). 〜そう is the colloquial equivalent.
