Structure

V-た形 + ところ

Explanation

Indicates that after trying the first action, one discovers the result, or that the second event immediately follows the first. Attached to the ta-form of verbs. Unlike たとたん, たところ emphasizes the result discovered after doing; the main clause is often a discovery or an unexpected fact.

Examples

先生に相談したところ、親切に教えてくださいました。

When I consulted my teacher, she kindly taught me.

新しいレストランに行ってみたところ、とてもおいしかった。

I tried the new restaurant, and the food turned out to be delicious.

Note

The main clause after たところ is an objective result or discovery; volition or commands are not used. Don't confuse it with the concessive たところで.
