Structure

V-辞書形 / V-ない形 + ことにする

Explanation

Indicates the speaker's own decision, "decide to...". The past form ことにした means the decision was made. Can also express a personal rule.

Examples

今年から、毎日日本語を勉強することにしました。

I've decided to study Japanese every day from this year.

健康のため、お酒をやめることにしました。

I've decided to quit drinking for my health.

Note

ことにする is a subjective decision; ことになる is an objective rule or result. Keep the difference in mind.
