い形 + ことに；な形（語幹）+ な + ことに；V-た形 + ことに
Explanation
Attached to emotion adjectives or verbs, ことに frames the speaker's emotional evaluation of the following content, "to one's...". E.g., 残念なことに、試合は中止になった.
Examples
残念なことに、コンサートは中止になりました。
Unfortunately, the concert was cancelled.
嬉しいことに、合格の知らせが届きました。
To my delight, I received word that I passed.
Note
ことに pairs with emotion expressions like 残念な/嬉しい/驚いた and appears at the start of the sentence.
