願望・意志N4

〜たがる

wants to... (third person)

Structure

V-ます形(語幹)+ たがる

Explanation

Expresses the desire or wish of a third person. Attached to the masu-stem of verbs, 〜たがる derives from 〜たい. Unlike 〜たい, 〜たがる is used to describe others' wishes. It conjugates as a godan (u-verb) pattern.

Examples

子供は外で遊びたがっています。

The child wants to play outside.

田中さんは新しいスマートフォンを買いたがっています。

Mr. Tanaka wants to buy a new smartphone.

Note

Use 〜たい for the first person and 〜たがる for the third person. In casual speech, 〜たがっている is commonly used for others' current wishes.
