Structure
V-て形 + しまう（口語：〜ちゃう / 〜じゃう）
Explanation
Attached to the te-form of verbs, 〜てしまう expresses: ① completion or finality of an action; ② regret, remorse or resignation, "to end up doing...". In speech it contracts to 〜ちゃう (past 〜ちゃった) after て, and 〜じゃう (past 〜じゃった) after で.
Examples
宿題を忘れてしまいました。
I ended up forgetting my homework.
このケーキ、全部食べちゃった。
I ended up eating this whole cake.
Note
〜ちゃう is a casual contraction: てしまう→ちゃう, でしまう→じゃう. When it merely marks completion there is no regret (e.g., 読み終わってしまった).
