Explanation
〜ということ expresses the content or fact of what precedes, equivalent to "the fact that...". It can also convey hearsay, "I heard that..." (e.g., 彼が合格したということは嬉しい).
Examples
彼が日本で働いているということを知っていますか。
Did you know that he works in Japan?
天気予報では、明日は雪が降るということです。
According to the weather forecast, it will snow tomorrow.
Note
In casual speech 〜ということ is shortened to 〜ってこと. Unlike 〜そうです (hearsay), 〜ということ emphasizes the content of the information itself.
