接続・逆接N4

〜ように(目的)

so that... / in order to...

Structure

V-辞書形 / V-ない形 + ように

Explanation

Dictionary/nai-form + ように marks purpose, "so that...". Unlike ために, the clause before ように can be a state or potential form, and the subject may differ from the main clause (聞こえるように、大きな声で話す).

Examples

子供にもわかるように、簡単な言葉で説明しました。

I explained in simple words so that even a child could understand.

遅刻しないように、早めに家を出ます。

I leave home early so as not to be late.

Note

The clause before ように often uses potential, negative or stative forms; ために takes volitional verbs with matching subjects. They can only rarely be swapped.
