〜あげく(に)

Structure

V-た形 + あげく(に);N + の + あげく(に)

Explanation

Indicates that after a long time or great effort, something finally results, usually a negative or unsatisfactory outcome. Attached to the ta-form of verbs or noun + の. The main clause is often in the past tense and follows words like 考えた, 話し合った, 苦労した.

Examples

いろいろ考えたあげく、その会社に入るのをやめました。

After thinking it over, I decided not to join that company.

長時間の話し合いのあげく、彼らは離婚することになった。

After long discussions, they ended up getting divorced.

Note

あげく usually leads to a negative outcome; for a positive result, 〜末(に) is more natural. With nouns, use の + あげく.
