〜末(に)

after... / in the end (after a process)

Structure

V-た形 + 末(に);N + の + 末(に)

Explanation

Indicates that after a long, multi-step process, something finally results. Attached to the ta-form of verbs or noun + の. Unlike あげく, the outcome of 末(に) can be positive or negative, and the process is emphasized.

Examples

長い苦労の末、ついに自分の店を持つことができた。

After years of hard work, I finally managed to open my own shop.

話し合った末に、一緒に住むことに決めた。

After discussing it, we decided to live together.

Note

末(に) allows both positive and negative outcomes, while あげく is usually negative. Also used as 〜末のN.
