Structure
V-ない形 + ずに済む／ないで済む；い形語幹 + くて済む；N + で済む
Explanation
Indicates that a problem was solved without needing to do something. Often in the past form ずに済んだ ("luckily didn't have to..."). Attached to the nai-stem of verbs (する → せずに済む). 〜なくて済む follows i-adjectives and nai-stems.
Examples
友達が助けてくれたので、お金を借りずに済んだ。
Thanks to my friend's help, I didn't have to borrow money.
早く気づいたから、大きな失敗をしないで済んだ。
Because I noticed early, I avoided a big mistake.
Note
Often appears in the past form ずに済んだ ("ended up not needing to..."). 済む emphasizes the problem being resolved.
