判断・推量N2

〜かのようだ

as if... / just like...

Structure

普通形/名詞+である + かのようだ/かのように/かのような

Explanation

Expresses that although something is not actually the case, it looks or feels as if it were. Attached to the plain form of verbs, noun + である, na-adjective + である, or i-adjective dictionary form. Used as 〜かのように before verbs and 〜かのようなN before nouns. A stronger version of 〜ように.

Examples

彼は何も知らなかったかのように、平然としていた。

He remained calm, as if he knew nothing.

まるで夢を見ているかのようだ。

It's just as if I were dreaming.

Note

Often pairs with まるで or あたかも. かのようだ emphasizes the contrast with reality more strongly than ようだ.
