Structure

V-ます形(語幹)+ かける/かけだ/かけの

Explanation

Attached to the masu-stem of verbs, indicating an action that has just started or is half done. 〜かける means "about to start" or "halfway through"; 〜かけだ/〜かけのN describes an unfinished state. Common combinations: 食べかけ, 書きかけ, 死にかける.

Examples

何か言いかけて、やめた。

He started to say something, then stopped.

書きかけの手紙が机の上に置いてある。

A half-written letter is lying on the desk.

Note

This かける means "halfway"; don't confuse it with the かける of 電話をかける. Also used with nouns: 食べかけのケーキ.
