Explanation
Three uses: ① "instead of / in place of" (after nouns or verbs); ② "in exchange" (after clauses: "in return for..."); ③ compensation/repayment. E.g., 私の代わりに行ってください; 英語を教える代わりに、日本語を教えてもらう.
Examples
電車の代わりに、バスで行くことにした。
I decided to take the bus instead of the train.
アルバイトを手伝ってくれる代わりに、お小遣いをあげる。
In return for helping me at the part-time job, I'll give you an allowance.
Note
In sense ② the two clauses form an equivalent exchange; it can also mean "on the other hand" (e.g., "this shop is cheap, but the taste is just average").
