Explanation
Noun + の or dictionary form + かわりに means "instead of... / in exchange for..." (e.g., タクシーのかわりに、歩いて帰った). It can also express compensation.
Examples
母のかわりに、私が買い物に行きました。
I went shopping instead of my mother.
バスに乗るかわりに、歩いて帰りました。
Instead of taking the bus, I walked home.
Note
かわりに can also state a condition of exchange (手伝うかわりに、おごってください). Unlike 〜ではなく, it has no negative meaning.
