Structure
V-ない形 + ことには（〜ない）
Explanation
Indicates that unless the first action is done, the second cannot hold; the main clause is usually negative (できない, わからない). Attached to the nai-form of verbs.
Examples
実際に食べてみないことには、味はわからない。
You can't know the taste without actually trying it.
話を聞かないことには、どう判断していいかわからない。
Without hearing the story, I can't decide what to do.
Note
The main clause must be negative. Similar to なければ〜ない, but ないことには stresses that the first step is essential.
