Structure

V-て形 + はじめて

Explanation

Indicates that only after experiencing the first action does one first do or realize something. Attached to the te-form of verbs (e.g., 親になってはじめて、親の苦労がわかった).

Examples

一人暮らしをしてはじめて、親のありがたさがわかった。

Only after living alone did I realize how much I owe my parents.

病気になってはじめて、健康の大切さを知った。

It was not until I got sick that I learned the importance of health.

Note

The main clause often uses verbs of realization (わかる, 知る, 気づく), expressing "only after experiencing X did I understand".
