Explanation

Indicates that after comparison, the second option is more fitting ("rather than X, Y"). Attached to nouns or the plain form of verbs/adjectives, often as というより、むしろ….

Examples

彼は日本語を教えるというより、話し相手をしている感じだ。

Rather than teaching Japanese, he seems more like a conversation partner.

この問題は難しいというより、量が多いのだ。

This problem isn't so much difficult as it is lengthy.

Note

Often paired with むしろ for emphasis. 〜というより(も) is also possible.
