Structure
V-辞書形 + ところだった；V-ようとした + ところだった
Explanation
Indicates that something (usually bad) almost happened but luckily did not. Attached to the dictionary form of verbs (するところだった) or ようとしたところだった (e.g., あやうく事故に遭うところだった).
Examples
あやうく電車に乗り遅れるところだった。
I almost missed the train.
もう少しで階段から落ちるところだった。
I almost fell down the stairs.
Note
Often pairs with あやうく or もう少しで; the event did not actually happen.
