Structure
V-ている/辞書形/た形 + ところに／ところへ
Explanation
Indicates that something (often interrupting, unexpected, or coincidental) happens right when the first action is in progress. Attached to ているところ, dictionary-form ところ, or た-form ところ. へ emphasizes approach more than に.
Examples
ちょうど出かけようとしているところに、電話がかかってきた。
Just as I was about to leave, the phone rang.
お風呂に入っているところへ、友達が訪ねてきた。
A friend came to visit while I was in the bath.
Note
The main clause is usually a sudden event (来る, 電話がかかる). Unlike ところを, ところに is used for coincidental events without interference.
