Structure

V-辞書形 / V-ない形 + ことになる

Explanation

Indicates an objective result, rule or arrangement, "it turns out that... / it is decided that...". Attaches to the dictionary/nai-form of verbs. Contrasts with ことにする (subjective decision).

Examples

来年、東京で働くことになりました。

It's been decided that I'll work in Tokyo next year.

会議は来週に延期することになりました。

It's been decided to postpone the meeting until next week.

Note

ことになる marks an objective result/arrangement; ことにする marks a subjective decision.
