Explanation

In the end things went so far as to... (a bad outcome). Attached to the dictionary/ta-form of verbs.

Examples

頼んだのに、結局は自分でやる始末だ。

Even though I asked for help, I ended up doing it myself.

無計画な経営のせいで、会社は倒産する始末だ。

Due to unplanned management, the company ended up going bankrupt.

Note

Usually a bad result (go so far as to...). Similar to あげく but stresses a miserable ending.
