Structure
普通形 + ものの；N + である + ものの
Explanation
Concessive: although..., the result is contrary to expectation. Attached to the plain form of verbs/adjectives or noun + である. More formal than のに.
Examples
大学に入学したものの、授業についていけない。
Although I entered university, I can't keep up with the classes.
高いお金を払って買ったものの、全然使っていない。
I paid a lot of money for it, but I never use it.
Note
Compared with のに, ものの is more objective and formal, often in the form 〜たものの.
