願望・感情N2

〜たいばかりに、〜ほしいばかりに

precisely because of wanting so badly to... (that...)

Structure

V-ます形(語幹)+ たいばかりに;N + がほしいばかりに

Explanation

Indicates that because one wanted so badly to realize a wish, a (usually negative) result followed. Attached to the masu-stem of verbs + たい; ほしいばかりに follows noun + がほしい. The result is often unsatisfactory, with a tone of regret.

Examples

彼女に好かれたいばかりに、無理をして高いプレゼントを買った。

Wanting her to like him so badly, he strained himself to buy an expensive gift.

早く痩せたいばかりに、食事を抜いて体を壊してしまった。

Wanting to lose weight so badly, she skipped meals and ruined her health.

Note

The result is usually negative or regrettable; a positive result would be unnatural. In speech, たいばっかりに is common.
