Structure

V-た形 + ばかりに;い形 + ばかりに;N + である + ばかりに

Explanation

Precisely because of the first clause, a (usually negative or regrettable) result followed. Attached to the ta-form of verbs, i-adjectives, or noun + である.

Examples

お金がなかったばかりに、大学に行けなかった。

Precisely because I had no money, I couldn't go to university.

一言余計なことを言ったばかりに、怒らせてしまった。

Just because I said one extra thing, I made him angry.

Note

Unlike から, ばかりに stresses that this one reason caused a bad result; the result must be negative. Compare たいばかりに.
