Structure

V-て形 + もいい

Explanation

Attached to the te-form of verbs, 〜てもいい gives permission, "may do...". Its negative form 〜なくてもいい means "don't have to...". The question 〜てもいいですか asks for permission.

Examples

ここで写真を撮ってもいいですか。

May I take pictures here?

明日は休んでもいいですよ。

You may take tomorrow off.

Note

In speech 〜てもいい is often shortened to 〜ていい or replaced by 〜ても大丈夫. In formal situations use 〜てもよろしいですか.
