助詞N4

〜とか

things like... / I heard that...

Structure

N / V-辞書形 + とか;文 + とか(伝聞)

Explanation

Two uses: ① listing nouns or dictionary-form verbs, "things like...", casual in tone; ② hearsay after a sentence, "I heard that...". E.g., コーヒーとか紅茶とか、どちらがいい?

Examples

パンとかサンドイッチとか、何か食べ物を買ってきてください。

Please buy something to eat, like bread or sandwiches.

聞いたんですが、田中さんは来月結婚するとか。

I heard that Tanaka is getting married next month.

Note

〜とか (listing) is used in casual speech. As hearsay it is more casual than 〜そうだ, and the latter part is often omitted.
